Hello, this is █████ from no gerrymandering, ████████. If you would prefer not to receive this type of call in the future, please push the number 2 on your phone keypad now. No gerrymandering Virginia is currently conducting a live toll-free town hall meeting over the phone to give voters in Virginia an opportunity to hear from Democrat activist ████████████. And the president of National Black Nonpartisan Redistricting Organization. We would be deeply grateful if you would please stay on the line and allow us to automatically connect you to our live Town Hall meeting about the important redistricting referendum on the ballots this month. This message has been paid for by no gerrymandering Virginia. RC8047093750. You4 are joining a live conference already in progress. Please be aware that your local phone company may leave your line open for up to ██ seconds after you leave the conference. If you would like to ask the speaker a question, please press 0. 9 to have an honest conversation Democrat to Democrat about why we believe the right vote on this amendment is no. I want to be up front. We are not here to tell you that gerrymandering by Republicans is acceptable. It is not. What Texas, Missouri and North Carolina have done is wrong. But the question in front of us is whether the right response is to do the same thing here in ████████ or whether we should protect the reform that we as Virginians have already fought for and won. Tonight we have two guests who have spent their careers fighting for fair elections and fair representation. And they are known to help us think through this together. Our first guest is █████████████. █████ is a lifelong Democrat in a democracy reform advocate who led the successful effort to pass Virginia's bipartisan redistricting amendment in ████. The very amendment that took map drawing out of the hands of politicians and gave it to a citizen led commission. That reform passed with a ██% of the vote with support from both parties. █████ now serves on the advisory board of no gerrymander in ████████. █████, welcome. Thanks so much for having me. Glad to be here. Our second guest is █████████████████, Esquire. ██████ is the executive director of the National Black Nonpartisan Redistricting Organization. He is a former ██ ██████ Marine Corps judge, advocate, and a past president of the Laban ██████ branch of the NAACP and has served on the executive committees of both the Virginia State Conference and of the NAACP and the Virginia ACLU. He is a graduate of Washington University School of Law. ██████ brings a clinical perspective tonight on how redistricting impacts black communities and communities of color across the Commonwealth. So let's thank you for being here. I appreciate it. Thank you. Yeah, and again folks, I want to remind you if you have a question for ██████ or █████ at any time, just press zero on your phone. We will get to many of your questions as we can tonight. So let's start with the basics because there's been a lot of confusion out there and frankly some of it's intentional. █████, in plain language, what exactly is on the ballot on ██████████ and what does a no vote actually mean? Sure, thank you. The ballot that you've got either now or will have by ████████ is a simple one. It says basically do we want to allow the general assembly to be able to redraw congressional maps. These maps would be in place until ████████████. So basically for three cycles of congressional elections, and that's going to you'll see there's a confusing words in there
