Texas leads the nation in robocalls, and 2 North Texas companies are being sued

MCKINNEY, Texas — Texans get more robocalls than any other state in the country, based on a software’s U.S. robocall heat map.

The app shows that over the last week, thousands of calls came through, with Texans blocking more than 38,000 of them.

Tucked away behind towering trees and vibrant vegetation, Jeff Gerhardt’s home on the outskirts of McKinney is like a hidden forest getaway nestled away in North Texas.

Even though his location looks like he lives off the grid, wildlife isn’t the only visitor making its way to his home.

“Oh, absolutely. It doesn’t matter where I’m at. Whether it’s Alaska, New York City, I get spam calls,” said Gerhardt.

He says he gets about three to five spam calls and 15 spam texts a day.

The constant calls take a toll while trying to run his coaching consultancy business and lead his nonprofit.

“So, if you think about every one of these that you have to analyze, there’s no less than 15-30 minutes of waste if you were to get that into one day. As you compound that over time, it’s just, it’s a big chunk to have that device and still have it taking away from you,” Gerhardt.

A New York-based anti-robocalling company is trying to give Gerhardt and other Texans and Americans their time back.

It’s called Nomorobo.

“So we’ve filed against four companies. All of them happen to be debt collectors, and all of them, based on our evidence, are engaging in deceptive or illegal practices,” said Matt Mizenko, general manager at Nomorobo.

According to Nomorobo’s U.S. robocall heat map, Texas leads the country with those annoying calls, and it’s not just because of its large population.

“Especially in Texas and Florida, with people that you know as they approach retirement age get older, and of course that’s the number one target for scammers,” said Mizenko.
