Spear Phishing Robocall Scam Alert: Verizon Fraud Calls Explained
April 30, 2026Social Security Scam Alert
A call out of the blue offering you $2,600 a month?
That’s exactly what scammers are counting on.
In a new wave of robocalls, fraudsters are posing as a so-called “Social Security Evaluation Department,” claiming you qualify for disability benefits you’re not receiving.
There’s just one problem. That department doesn’t exist.
Watch and Learn
In our latest Fraud Fighters video, we break down a real robocall where a scammer says:
“You’re perfectly qualified to receive a Social Security disability benefit of up to $2,600 per month. Press 1 to learn more.”
It sounds official. It sounds helpful.
It’s neither.
How this Scam Works
The scam starts with a simple hook - free money.
According to Nomorobo investigators, these robocalls claim you’re eligible for disability benefits, even if you never applied.
If you press a number or engage, the scam escalates quickly.
The caller will:
- Ask for your Social Security number
- Request personal and financial details
- Claim they need this information to “set up payments”
But that’s not what’s happening.
What Scammers Are Really After
Once they have your information, scammers can:
- Apply for benefits in your name
- Access your financial accounts
- Sell your data to other criminals
In other words, that “$2,600 benefit” could cost you far more.

Red Flags to Watch For
Be skeptical if a caller:
- Promises unexpected benefits or free money
- Claims you qualify for payments you didn’t apply for
- Uses unfamiliar agency names
- Asks for sensitive personal information
- Pushes you to act immediately
And most importantly, there is no “Social Security Evaluation Department.”
The Truth About Social Security Calls
Here’s what official agencies say:
- The SSA will not call you out of the blue to offer increased benefits
- They will not ask for sensitive information over the phone
- Legitimate benefit discussions happen through official channels
If you want to check your eligibility, contact the SSA directly:

How to Protect Yourself
- Hang up immediately
- Do not press any buttons
- Never share personal or financial information
- Verify everything independently
And remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
