Robocalls Keep Rising Despite Laws and Lawsuits
April 21, 2026Spam Texts Are Catching Up to Robocalls
Robocalls are still a problem. But scam texts are quickly becoming just as dangerous.
In a recent interview on Los Angeles’ KFI AM 640 / ABC News Radio, our Managing Director, Matt Mizenko, explained how phone scams are evolving, why texts are becoming a bigger threat, and how AI is helping scammers get more targeted.
Listen to the audio:
From landlines to Nomorobo Max
As Matt explained, Nomorobo started with a simple but clever idea. Founder Aaron Foss built an early call-blocking system using simultaneous ring technology, allowing incoming calls to be checked against a database of known bad numbers before they reached the customer.
That was the beginning of Nomorobo. Today, the company has grown far beyond landlines, with products like Nomorobo Max and its spam text blocking tools, which are built to help stop scam calls, phishing texts, and other unwanted communications before they become a problem.
Why texts are becoming the bigger threat
One of Matt’s biggest points was that the mix is changing.
For years, scam calls dominated and texts were a much smaller slice of the problem. Now that gap is closing fast. Matt said texts are getting close to a 50/50 split with calls, and could soon overtake them as the preferred scam channel.
That makes sense. A text feels casual. It feels personal. And it is often easier to ignore your instincts when the message looks like a quick note instead of a threatening phone call.
AI is making scams more convincing
A few years ago, scammers relied more on volume. They spoofed local numbers, blasted calls across an area code, and hoped someone would answer.
Now, as Matt explained, they are getting more precise. AI helps them build profiles, gather information from the web, and make their outreach feel more believable. The scam itself is still a confidence game. The difference is that the “friend” on the other end may already know enough about you to sound real.
That is what makes modern scam texts and calls more dangerous: they do not have to be good. They just have to feel plausible for a few seconds.
Why those random “hey” texts matter
Matt also broke down the point of those vague messages:
- “Hey, how are you?”
- “Are you available for a moment?”
- “Is this the right number?”
They are not trying to start a meaningful conversation. They are trying to get you engaged.
Once someone replies, scammers often try to move the conversation off your normal messaging app and onto services like WhatsApp or Telegram. From there, it becomes easier to push suspicious links, fake websites, or other traps.
The three levers scammers use
Matt said scammers usually rely on three things:
- Urgency
- Authority
- Financial loss or gain
Urgency is the most dangerous. If someone is pushing you to act immediately, that is usually the moment to slow down.
A real company can survive five extra minutes while you verify. A scammer hates that.

What to do instead
Matt’s advice was simple: step back and verify.
If a message feels strange, too good to be true, or overly urgent:
- Do not click the link
- Do not share personal information
- Do not move the conversation to another app
- Look up the company or agency yourself
- Contact them using a number or website you trust
For tax issues or identity questions, it is always smarter to go straight to IRS.gov or your IRS Online Account instead of trusting a random caller or text. And if someone has already shared information, resources like the AARP Fraud Watch Network can help people figure out what to do next.
How Nomorobo Helps
When asked whether Nomorobo can help with spam calls and scam texts, Matt said yes. He described a two-layer approach: block numbers already known to be bad, then screen unfamiliar callers before they get through.
That matches Nomorobo’s current product approach. Nomorobo Max focuses on blocking spam calls and filtering suspicious texts, while Fraud Fighters gives consumers access to real scam recordings, education, and practical tips to recognize fraud faster.
Take Back Control of Your Phone
Scammers are adapting fast. They are using AI, shifting toward texts, and trying harder than ever to sound believable.
That is why the best defense is still the simplest one: slow down, verify, and put protection in place before the next scam gets through.
Try Nomorobo today to help block spam calls, filter scam texts, and make your phone useful again.
