“A Package Has Been Seized…”
It starts with a call that sounds official:
“Hi, this is U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A package has been seized and confiscated under your name. Press 1 now to avoid being arrested.”
Scary, right? The idea of being accused of smuggling or sending something suspicious is enough to rattle anyone.
That’s exactly what the scammers want.
How the U.S. Customs Scam Works
This scam is designed to shock you into reacting. Here’s the playbook:
The setup: A threatening message claiming your name is tied to a confiscated package.
The pressure: “Press 1 now to avoid being arrested.”
The trap: Once you press, scammers will try to extract personal info, Social Security numbers, or even demand payment.
Their goal is simple: use fear of law enforcement to steal your information and money.
Why It’s Effective
This scam works because it preys on our instinct to panic when authority is involved.
Fear of legal trouble — Nobody wants to be accused of a crime.
Urgency — “Press 1 now” gives you no time to think.
Authority impersonation — Scammers pretend to be U.S. Customs, a trusted federal agency.
But here’s the truth: U.S. Customs and Border Protection will never call you out of the blue like this.

How to Stay Safe From Fake Customs Calls
Don’t press a number. Never respond to automated calls demanding urgent action.
Verify independently. If you’re concerned, contact the agency directly through official websites or phone numbers.
Report and block. Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM) and hang up on fake calls.
Protect yourself. Nomorobo blocks these scams before they ever reach your phone.
Don’t Let Fear Do the Scammer’s Work
Scammers are counting on fear to cloud your judgment. Instead of reacting, pause and ask yourself: “Does this even make sense?”
Most victims never sent a package at all. That’s your clue it’s a scam.
Fraud Fighter Pro Tip
Federal agencies like U.S. Customs and Border Protection never make unsolicited calls.
If you receive a call or text claiming you’re under investigation for sending a suspicious package or some other alleged violation, hang up immediately and report it to the FBI or the Federal Trade Commission.
