- Transcript Hello? This is Don Brown, sheriff of Catawba County. I would like to notify all citizens of a phone scam going on within the county. Citizens are being targeted by callers pretending to be a deputy. Subjects are providing fake badge numbers, case numbers and warrant numbers. Callers are requesting you withdraw money and or transfer funds to a gift guard. Their scare tactics involve your Social Security number being compromised and being wanted for failure to report for jury duty or even money laundering. These individuals are persistent and intimidating, but please know that I and my deputies would never call you demanding money. Here are a few tips that may keep you from falling victim to these criminals. Be highly suspicious of anyone calling you from a number you do not recognize. Do not give any money to anyone without independently verifying their identity. Government agencies will not request that you purchase gift cards. The IRS and other government sponsored collection agencies do not call from random and or foreign area codes. If you are unsure of the legitimacy of someone, one who has contacted you, please contact law enforcement before giving them any money. Do not give these criminals your money. Report these calls to my office at 828-464-5241. To repeat this message, press any key now.

The highest compliment is to say it does EXACTLY what it claims to do. It stops scammers DEAD. Thank you!
— Anonymous, Nov 29th, 9:35am
It gets almost every call. Terrific, and well worth triple the cost.
— Ralph, Nov 29th, 10:51am
Finally a tool that that is more persistent than telemarketers! Thank you Nomorobo! The only thing that could improve it would be if it hung up on the calls before the phone even rang!
— Beth C, Nov 29th, 11:05am

When we receive "one ringy dingy", we say "NoMorobo"!
— Billy I, Nov 29th, 12:14pm
It's great. I'd say it blocks about 5 calls a day. I don't even bother to head to the phone to answer it until I hear a second ring.
— Donna, Nov 29th, 12:21pm
I love nomorobo as it works as described, now I no longer receive those annoying calls. Thanks for Nomorobo.
