- Transcript Aloha. This is Senator Brian shots at 808-523-2061 I'm calling to invite you to a live telephone town hall that I'm hosting right. Now. To join. Just stay on the line. I'll be sharing an update on what's happening in Washington and taking any questions that you might have again to participate, just stay on the line. To ask a question, please press star three and the call is going to begin soon. Please hold while we connect you to your access live event. This access live event is currently in progress. Please note that this call may be monitored, recorded, or rebroadcast. And so. I don't want to be too optimistic because you never know what's going to happen with this administration, but we're hopeful that that will be unlocked on the bad news. Side. More than $40 million in grants to the University of Hawaii have been terminated or frozen. That's about 17% of Uh's federal grants. And about $20 million. Of federal conservation money has been terminated or frozen equally, about 10% of the department of Atlanta natural Resources budget. So sort of good news, bad news. Good news is in the big picture. We're still getting vastly more than 90% of the expected federal funds. The bad news is that there are cuts and they do hurt. My team is tracking the status of these funding streams on a daily basis. We have a live spreadsheet. And I get an update all the time, and I work with the governor and the county mayors. To make sure and the nonprofits in the University of Hawaii to make sure everybody is aware of whether the federal funding is coming. But beyond the federal funding that has already been allocated, we're also going to feel the effects of the tax bill that Trump and the Republicans are. Trying to pass. They are trying to pass the biggest tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals in american history and the way they're going to try to pay for that is major cuts to Medicaid. And snap. That's nutritional assistance. And that will mean less help for the people in Hawaii. I will say that there was an attempt to repeal the aff. Affordable Care act in the first Trump administration, and with a lot of help and ultimately bipartisan opposition, we were able to avert that disaster and keep people with their health care and with that. I want to get to your questions. We have hundreds and hundreds of people on the call with us across the state of Hawaii, and we're going to try to get to as many questions as we can. If we don't get to your question. My entire team is on the call. Please write in and we will follow up with a response. My goal is to hear from as many of you as possible. But obviously we're not going to be able to handle every question. But you will get an answer. If you submit a question in writing. So with that, I'll turn it back to Malia. To get us going.
