  • Transcript Hi, this is Jake Anderson with the City of Dallas. You can press two to opt out of future telephone town hall calls. I'm offering you the chance to join our live telephone town hall meeting going over the charter review commission, which is happening right now. Every ten years, the city reviews its constitution or its city charter. Just stay on the line to be automatically connected. We will be discussing potential changes to the charter and will provide more background information, pull you to gather feedback and let you ask questions of the commissioners. In November, you're going to be asked to vote on each potential change, so we want to hear from you now as the proposals are shaped. If you would like to ask the speaker a question, please press zero to discuss some of the changes to the city of Dallas charter, which is basically the city's constitution. So the charter is the foundation on which our city's government is built. And every ten years, a group of volunteer commissioners are appointed by city council to review the charter in order to ensure that it's fair, that it's efficient, it's equitable, and that it's aligned with state law. So the commission is in the process of reviewing 125 different amendments. So far, they've advanced 31 for final consideration and 83 they've excluded or withdrawn. There's eleven more that they have to get through, and they will be considering those tomorrow night during their public meeting held at city hall. Now, usually the amendments, the 31 amendments that they've advanced are technical in nature, so they're designed to align with state law or clean up some language that maybe doesn't make sense. One good example is a technical suggestion that was made to change some language in the charter, because right now the charter says that the city council must receive a recommended yearly budget from the city manager on August 15. But as you and I all know, sometimes August 15 falls on a weekend. So the suggestion is simply to change the language to say that the budget is delivered by the 15th. So in practice, that does.
