I really appreciate everyone joining the Telephone tonight. I wanted to do this so soon after the ████████ just because of all the developments that are going on, everything that's going on with ████████████, everything that's going on with ice, everything that's going on in █████████, just everything. That's going on that really is an attack on the ideals of what we founded this country on. So before I start, I know some of you don't know who I am, but ever before I was ever a █████████████ member of Congress, I was a union organizer fighting for working people, fighting for better wages, safer workplaces and of course, making sure that people are respected on the job. That's because, like many of the people in my district and across the country, I'm the proud son of working class Mexican immigrants. My parents were from █████████ and ██████████████. They moved here with four of my siblings and their brother and I were born here. They worked four to five jobs a week to make ends meet. Working long hours with no health insurance just to get by, just to save enough money to buy a house. My parents, a lot of parents who don't have health insurance often wait to see if a child gets better or they get worse. Unfortunately, I got worse. Ended up staying in a hospital for about a week. And that one week stay almost ripped in my family. And I kind of. That stuck with me. What it means not to have health insurance, what it means when your parents are working four or five jobs a week to make ends meet, and how you're just one emergency away from losing it all. And that's one of the things I wanted to make sure that doesn't happen to work in people. But unfortunately, right now we are seeing this administration really attacking all the opportunities that had existed for my parents, that existed for me, and have been out of touch for far too many people for far too long. Everything about going to college and not leaving the debt, Medicaid that will help people get care, health care services that they need to stay healthy, affordable. Affordable housing, as well as making sure that people had access to Medicare and Social Security in their old age. When we provide all that to people, not only can they thrive, at home and in their own communities they can actually give back to their country to make sure that everybody has that opportunity but now more than
