January 22, 2026Iowa Sees Spike in Robocalls as Holiday Phone Scams Grow
As the holiday shopping season ramps up, Iowans are being warned to expect a surge in robocalls and phone scams, many powered by increasingly sophisticated AI tools.
In a recent report from Radio Iowa, Matt Mizenko, General Manager of Nomorobo, said scam activity in Iowa has risen faster than the national average over the past several weeks.
“Iowa was about 18% higher than average,” Mizenko explained, noting that blocked scam calls in the state jumped roughly 50%, well above national trends.
According to Mizenko, scams tied to health insurance open enrollment are especially common right now, with IRS and tax related scams typically increasing after the holidays. Many of these calls rely on caller ID spoofing, making fake calls appear local or even government issued.
“Even if a call looks legitimate, don’t trust it,” Mizenko warned. “Hang up and call back using a verified number.”
Nomorobo has also seen a recent spike in spoofed government numbers, reinforcing why consumers should not rely on Caller ID alone and instead use layered protection like Nomorobo’s call and text blocking technology.
