Scam Activity Surges Across Georgia
New data highlights how aggressive scam activity has become in Georgia. On average, residents received about one robocall per day in 2024. During the first quarter of the previous year, the state recorded 437 fraud reports per 100,000 people, the highest rate nationwide.
In 2023, Georgia consumers reported more than 65,000 scams, resulting in an estimated $2.1 million in losses per 1,000 residents.
Nomorobo General Manager Matt Mizenko joined 11Alive News to help explain what’s driving these numbers.

Why Scammers Are Getting More Aggressive
Experts point to two key factors. The recent government shutdown reduced enforcement activity, creating opportunities for scammers. At the same time, this time of year brings heightened anxiety around Medicare enrollment, taxes, holiday shopping, and package deliveries.
Scammers exploit that pressure. “Urgency is the main driver,” experts explained. “When people feel rushed, they’re more likely to make mistakes.”
The Tactics Behind Most Scams
According to Nomorobo, most scams rely on the same three elements:
-
Authority - pretending to be a government agency, employer, or financial institution
-
Urgency - demanding immediate action
-
Financial Threats - warning of lost money, benefits, or legal trouble
These psychological tactics are designed to catch people off guard.
Who’s Being Targeted Now
While older adults remain frequent targets, experts warn that younger consumers are increasingly at risk. Messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, combined with cash transfer platforms such as Venmo, Cash App, and Zelle, allow scammers to move quickly and avoid oversight.
“One wrong click can be enough,” experts noted.
Staying Alert Still Matters
Even as blocking technology improves, awareness remains essential. Consumers are encouraged to slow down, question unexpected messages, and share scam encounters with others.
