Fraud Fighter Alert — November 24, 2025
Nomorobo’s Honeypot Digital Monitoring System has detected a surge in a new twist on an old scam, one that targets frustrated consumers desperate to stop robocalls. Scammers are now impersonating the Do Not Call (DNC) Registry, hoping you’ll trust the name long enough to hand over your credit card.
Here’s what the calls sound like:
“Hi there, this is Clara calling from DNC Registry Services… We’ve built a simple service that provides a permanent fix for spam and telemarketing calls. If you’d like to stop those calls for good, I can connect you with a specialist…”
The moment you say yes, you're transferred to a salesperson who claims, for a one-time fee, they can sign you up for the Do Not Call list and eliminate unwanted calls.
They’ll even imply they’re working with the federal government.
They’re not.
This scam has now reached thousands of phones, and variations of the same pitch are spreading fast. Nomorobo’s honeypot recordings confirm that many consumers fall for it simply because the scam invokes the familiar “Do Not Call Registry” name.
How This Scam Works
Scammers bank on one simple truth:
People hate robocalls.
By pretending to represent an official-sounding “DNC Registry Service,” these callers:
-
Claim they can stop spam calls “permanently”
-
Pressure you to act immediately
-
Ask for credit card information
-
Collect personal data for future fraud
-
Trick victims into believing they are speaking to a government representative
In reality, these callers have no connection to the Federal Trade Commission, which operates the real Do Not Call Registry.
Why this Scam Is Dangerous
The scam doesn’t just cost victims unnecessary fees, it puts your personal information directly into the hands of fraudsters.
Once they have your:
-
Credit card number
-
Name and address
-
Phone number
-
Potentially even your date of birth
…they can use it for identity theft or sell it to other scammers.
And of course, no robocalls actually stop.

How to Protect Yourself
Scammers use urgency and authority to pressure you into acting fast. Slow down, stay skeptical, and use these steps to protect yourself:
- The real Do Not Call Registry is always free. The FTC will never call, text, or ask you to pay to sign up or stay registered.
- Never share payment or personal information with unsolicited callers. Government agencies do not call out of the blue asking for credit card numbers, Social Security details, or fees.
- Hang up on anyone claiming to be from the “Do Not Call” list. No legitimate representative will contact you by phone, ever.
- Look for red flags. Generic scripts, unfamiliar numbers, pushy sales tactics, and promises to “stop all robocalls instantly” are all signs of a scam.
- Report the scam. Forward details to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov so investigators can track fraudulent activity and protect others.
If the caller truly worked for the Do Not Call Registry, they wouldn’t be calling you and they definitely wouldn’t be asking you to pay for something that’s already free.
Fraud Fighter Pro Tip
If someone calls and claims to be from the Do Not Call Registry, it’s a scam.
They will attempt to charge you a fee and gather your personal information.
The real Do Not Call Registry never calls you.
Registration is 100% free at the official government site:
If you encounter a call like this, hang up immediately and report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
